For years, the Sumatra Rainforest Institute (SRI) has stood as a trusted local NGO anchored in the landscapes where we live. We understand that effective conservation cannot be imported; it must be cultivated from within, rooted in local knowledge, and driven by steadfast accountability.

To achieve strong impacts, our strategic direction focuses on innovation for internal and external sustainability. Internally, we are strengthening our institutional foundations by optimizing governance and ensuring financial transparency. Externally, we always develop innovative forest restoration, patrols, agroforestry, livelihood management, and community-based monitoring by blending traditional wisdom with cutting-edge technology.

Because no single organization can secure Sumatra’s natural heritage alone, we are deeply committed to multi-stakeholder collaboration. We align our grassroots initiatives with the Government of Indonesia’s national forestry, climate, and biodiversity targets to support policy implementation on the ground.

We also empower local communities as active leaders in conservation management, based on mutual respect for local roles and customs, while working alongside other NGOs to provide mutual reinforcement. True progress happens at the intersection of diverse expertise and shared responsibility.

Conservation success requires economic justice for communities living on the forest fringes, as well as robust climate change adaptation. We actively promote green economy initiatives and sustainable livelihoods so that local populations experience tangible benefits, while strengthening climate resilience to protect watersheds and maintain natural carbon sinks.

Sumatra’s incredible biodiversity—from the Sumatran tiger to the Tapanuli orangutan—does not have the luxury of time. By deepening internal resilience, embracing innovation, and uniting our strengths, we invite all partners to turn our shared vision into lasting action.
